Holiday reading without the weight!

Posted by Guy Pringle, 30th June 2011

I’ve finally succumbed to a Kindle which has brought a dilemma. As someone lucky enough to be surrounded by a choice of – physical - new books every day, what do I load on to this new device for my short holiday?

So here goes:

The Dark Tower 1 by Stephen King because I enjoyed Under the Dome so much and Magic by William Goldman because The Princess Bride was so brilliant - even though it’s supposed to be quite scary.

Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance has long been on my to be read list, and as Debbie pointed out at 700+ pages it doubly merits its place. It was also her idea that I add in Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince, a book unknown to me but one she recommends for ‘cleansing the palate between courses’.

That led me into the free books – out of copyright classics - where I resisted the temptation to load them for the snob value. There’s a genuine chance I’ll re-read at least two of them: Charles Dickens for Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, Anthony Trollope for Barchester Towers and Return of the Native and Pride and Prejudice because they can’t not be on there.

Lastly, non-fiction - I’ve heard so many glowing reports of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot I thought I’d take a chance. And being a man of a certain age you might have predicted that Life by Keith Richards would be in there for variety.

Which means there’s still room in my case for three - physical - proofs but I’ll declare those on my return.

Hope you enjoy your Kindle as much as I do mine - I've downloaded mainly classics as they're free - not for the snob value I assure you! I really am reading them all!
I also love it for being able to send documents to it, so now when I'm researching an author or reading reviews I can turn them into a Word doc and read them in comfort, rather than struggling on my PC screen.
Happy Reading!
