Bike coverBIKE! A TRIBUTE TO THE WORLD'S GREATEST CYCLING DESIGNERS

by Richard Moore & Daniel Benson

published by Aurum Press

This is a very well presented coffee-table book which is an extremely good read for all enthusiasts who are not only interested in cycling as a sport but ‘into’ the bikes we ride and cherish.

It mainly concentrates on classic road bikes but does touch on track, cyclo-cross and mountain bikes in its 350 pages and all the builders of frames throughout
the years are covered in detail, telling of the birth of the company through to the years when their bikes were ridden by the world’s best riders. How the father handed down his frame-building expertise to his son and then on to his grandson makes compulsive reading and the black and white and full colour pictures of the frame details are first class.

Classic frame-builders, especially in the post Second World War era are well covered, names like Gios, Colnago, Bianchi, De Rosa and Pinarello are all there, together with equipment manufacturers like Campagnola, Shimano, Mavic and Sram. Framebuilding is brought right up to date with aluminium, titanium and carbon fibre all covered.

One-off bikes like Graeme Obree’s old faithful, Chris Boardman’s Lotus, and Mark Cavendish’s McLaren Venge get coverage as well and there are stories and pictures of the famous professionals who rode these famous bikes during their careers.

This is a must-read book for everyone interested in cycling, but especially those who appreciate the love, care and time the classic bike-builders put into creating their masterpieces.
