Angela and Sarah

That's Ms Hicken, Hampshire's Literature Development Officer and Ms Greenaway, Events and Development Officer at Gosport Discovery Centre to give them their full titles. But last Thursday, Angela had devised the quiz and she and Sarah had promoted the evening, bringing together around 50 women (and one man!) from several local reading groups.

Having done all the hard work, they had asked me to swan in and be the quizmaster for the evening, which turned out to be a really fun thing to do. Each group arrived with their own refreshments and the tables were heaving with a variety of snacks and bottles. All entered into the spirit although with some trepidation at the start – would their collective knowledge allow them to acquit themselves well enough? One group – Six-Geese-a-Laying - had agreed to wear Christmas hats (of some quality, it has to be said) which perhaps spurred them to a half time lead but the picture round did for them and PageTurners finally emerged worthy winners.

As an evening’s entertainment it was superb, although I say it myself, and they all left the building in high spirits, even those who hadn’t brought alcohol. Yet another example of what libraries (and even Discovery Centres!) do for us.

In this morning’s daily trade email, I came across a plea from the Friends of Gloucestershire Libraries asking recipients to consider signing and circulating a joint open letter to Ed Vaizey -

I’m amazed I haven’t come across this brilliant initiative already but have now added my name and perhaps you might do the same (but before next Monday)?

You might also like to try some of Angela’s – extremely hard – questions for yourself, answers next week.

General Book Knowledge

1 Carry On film veteran, Jim Dale, performs which book-related task in the USA which in this country is carried out by Stephen Fry?

2 Which one time resident of 10 Downing Street co-wrote a biography of the opera singer Joan Sutherland?

3 According to legend, which poet’s last words were, ‘I’ve had 18 straight whiskies, I think that’s a record’?

4 Gilbert Markham is the narrator in which novel by Anne Bronte?

5 This British playwright and screenwriter was born in Hackney in 1930. His first play was published in 1957. He died on Christmas Eve 2008. Who is he?

Hi Guy

Good luck with the petition. I have just picked up an announcement (on Google news) from the Press Association which said that Brent campaigners trying to save six libraries have lost their appeal in the High Court.
